Deep in the ground (approx. 6 meters = 6 yards) the air that has been dragged there as bubbles by the water is collected in an air chamber. The water then runs out into the lock basin without any air bubbles.
Due to the hydrostatic pressure this air is at 0.6 bar pressure underground and it can be used anywhere in the system.
